What is Cardamom
Cardamom is a relative to Ginger and is known as “the Queen of Spices”, and is a very popular spice in places all over the world for a variety of dishes, it has a beautiful warming and very soothing quality about it.
The essential oil is steam distilled from the Cardamom seeds.
Sourcing Cardamom Essential Oil
doTERRA has created a co-impact sourcing initiative in Guatemala to source our beautiful Cardamom essential oil.
This partnership provides consistent, dependable jobs to people who often struggle to make a living, this sustainable income helps them purchase needed supplies like food and healthcare, which improves the health of the workers and their families. Additionally, the doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation® has partnered with CHOICE Humanitarian on several projects. The first is a vocational school that teaches people, both young and old, various skills. These skills range from construction to hospitality to agriculture, providing people with needed skills to find employment and get out of poverty.
Another project is a drying facility for cardamom. After being harvested, cardamom stays fresh for only about three days. This facility makes it possible for farmers to dry their plants at peak freshness, making a higher quality essential oil. Being able to quickly dry cardamom also increases the price that a farmer can receive for his cardamom. doTERRA has also funded agricultural training specifically for cardamom farmers. This training covers everything from seed selection to water to harvest time, helping farmers produce a better product.
How to Use Cardamom
The specific species of Cardamom that we source from Guatemala is beautifully balanced in that it has quite an equal amount of properties that benefit the respiratory system as it does the digestive system.
You will notice if you take a drop of Cardamom, rub your hands together and breathe it in, how warming and opening it is for your airways, it is a beautiful oil to diffuse in the home, especially in Winter, as it is so warming and supportive of the breath. Try diffusing it with oils like Lemon, Peppermint and Ginger or experiment with your own blends.
Equally it is incredibly supportive and soothing for the digestive system, try using it in your cooking, add it to a delicious curry or even a smoothie!
Or just take a drop in some coconut oil and apply to your stomach in a clockwise direction, as that is the direction your digestive tract runs.
Emotional Properties
According to Essential Emotions Cardamom is the Oil of Objectivity and “helps bring balance, mental clarity and objectivity during moments of extreme anger and frustration.”
When I tune into Cardamom
Remember you can take a journey with each beautiful oil of the week, breathe Cardamom in, lie down and put on my Deepen with the Plants spotify playlist.
When I tune into Cardamom I’m reminded that my anger exists for a reason.
It is a healthy, normal human emotion and most often arises when I’ve either crossed my own boundary or someone else has crossed a boundary, and I haven’t fully spoken my truth or expressed my boundary clearly and firmly.
Use Cardamom to support having a healthy relationship with your holy rage.
Where you neither deny and suppress.
Nor use it as an excuse to explode outwardly in inappropriate or hurtful or to internally implode and harm yourself.
When anger arises feel it, express it by screaming into a pillow, putting on Killing in the Name Of by Rage Against the Machine, taking a boxing class, rage dancing or whatever practice allows you to fully feel the rage and move it through.
Remember no emotion lasts when fully felt, acknowledged and released.
Take the time to be with that anger.
Why has it come up?
Can you use this rage to fuel your passion and do something about it?
ie if a boundary is crossed or you see this happening time and time again collectively, can you choose to be a voice for this thing, from a place of passion where you have taken the time to move through the rage and come from a passionate, fiery heart?
Sometimes our anger is well and truly justified and is showing us that something needs to be changed. Something needs to be done.
Other times it’s an opportunity to reflect on where we can take personal responsibility for what’s showing up in our own lives and within, and to return to our centre, get a grip on reality and cut the crap.
Are we blowing up over things that could easily be let go?
Or is this something truly worth exploring in a healthy, grounded way.
Bring the breath back into your body, tune into what is really here for you and let it move through you so it doesn’t leak out in destructive ways later.
